His father had insisted on getting discharged from the hospital even though he was still felling weak because as he'd said, if he was going to die anyway, he wanted to do it in the comfort of his own house, not in the confines of some hospital room. The fact that Doctor Andrews had agreed to discharge him and had only prescribed some pain medication without issuing any attempts to change his mind had thawed every remnants of Adam's hopes there'd been.

Adams POV Yes I remember it like it was yesterday and I wish I didn't. I remember when I paid off a nurse to call Dave and tell him that his mother died during abortion. I remember I had stood there and watched the nurse make the call. Everyday it feels like Anna's ghost is after me. I never let my wife know about that mistake I made in the past. Mrs Bright made a choking laugh, then hugged her son for the very last time, her voice barely audible as she whispered, "I love you so much." “I love you too, Mum,” Adams said before pulling out of the hug before he was tempted to stay there forever, his voice filled with love and sorrow. “Goodbye, Dad,” he said, giving his father a warm hug before opening the door and going outside, his voice filled with sadness and longing.

He stood and began to clear the table with the quiet efficiency he brought to everything, and I sat and watched him and thought about Don Adriano's last words, the ones delivered at the door with the weight of someone who had never once in his life said anything without meaning it completely.
