I picked up a pencil as I saw the image clearly before me, and I began to sketch. I looked at the image I had just drawn and smiled. "This should be how she looks." I think I did a good job and was able to draw her. I passed the pad to Jake and Malcolm so they could take a look. "I know her; a little spitfire she is." Jake commented as soon as he saw the drawing. "You did a damn job of capturing her, even with the nasty scowl she always seems to wear." He praised me, subtly throwing a shade at her, and I smiled. I also passed the pad to Malcolm to look at.

He drew the jawline from memory, with clean bones and flayed skin. Then he moved on to another one, this time the figure had a bag over its head, ropes binding its wrists. He didn’t give them names. They were just shapes, bruises, positions he recognized. Even when he tried to take a break, his pencil kept moving. By the time he got to the fourth page, his fingers were sore. He had sketched a man nailed to a wall, skinless, with teeth scattered like loose screws below. Luca stared at it, blinked, and then set the pencil down as if it had burned him.

" Are you feeling good down there?" " I am," I peeked at my drawing. Inspecting the somehow horrifying image. Okay! To get this straight...I drew something which almost seemed to look like an eagle...it had wings so long that it occupied the entire space of the paper. The wings had symbols that I saw as designs. I made its eyes wide like that of an owl but its peak was like that of a raven. It was flying, and behind it, I drew a small moon at the corner of the paper, beneath the eagle's feet was a trace of reflecting water.

JAYDEN’s POV The scratching of my pencil against paper had always been enough to shut me out the rest of the world when I’m not drinking or punching and today, I needed it to draw. Sketching had always been something easier for me, the lines coming together made sense, since it felt like people had begun to lose sense recently. The dorm door clicked open behind me, snapping me out of my wonderland. I didn’t bother looking up as I already knew who it was. There was only one person who managed to walk into a room without his annoying his presence to the room.

Chloe's POV The sketchbook was open on the kitchen table and the pencils were laid out in order from 6H to 8B because that was the way Léo had arranged them on the first day he sat down next to her with his own sketchbook. The 6H made light lines. The 8B made dark lines. Most of the drawing happened in the middle. She used the 4B for almost everything because it didn't smudge when you pressed hard.

So that means getting going now. Having a blank page for a commission, and getting started on it, that’s two different things. After wasting most of my free period staring at a large white rectangle, I give up and start doodling in a sketchpad instead. Sketches of faces, mostly. The Pack. Imogen. Mom. The college staff. My tutor, Mrs Bird, as a Sergeant Major in a feathery rainbow uniform, strutting around bellowing orders. Jade as a crow, teaching crow martial arts to a bunch of baby crows. Mary in a Cinderella ball gown. Reese as a tiger. Tom as a warrior fairy, with dragonfly wings and a silver rapier.

I looked at the paper for a long time. It was a standard sheet, medium weight, slightly textured. The kind I had used throughout the program. The pencils in the cup were good ones, the kind that cost more than they look like they should. Marco had not bought the cheap set. I picked up a pencil. It was an HB, middle of the range, the right choice for a first mark when you do not know yet what you are drawing. My hand was shaking. Not dramatically. A fine tremor, the kind that shows up when you have not done something in a long time and your body is both remembering how and registering that it has been too long. I watched my hand for a moment. Then I put the pencil to the paper.

I glanced at a few of the books, some fantasy novels and a small sketch pad. I opened the sketch pad and looked through it, she was good. Really good. The scenes were mostly outdoors. Forests, waterfalls, mountains. All done with such grace and precision. Each more lovely and realistic than the last. I noticed at the bottom there was a J written as beautifully as the drawings themselves. I got to the last page and there was a drawing of a moon. Bright and beautiful in the sky but there was something else to it. The drawing felt sad. “What the hell.” I snapped as I lifted my hand and wiped a tear from my cheek.

Beside the paper and pen lay a thin box with a set of graphic pencils. A drawing kit? I opened the pad immediately and began to draw, the dream pouring through me like water down a cliff. It was vivid and fast, my fingers moving on instinct and guided by the memory that wad etched into my mind. The dizzying swirl of numbers, the images in the holographic screens, the massive glowing codes. I drew it as perfectly as I could, adding the faces of my children. After several minutes, I felt no more inspiration coming, so I sat back and stared at the sketch. My fingers had gone sore, my breathing a bit shallow.

_______________ The image popped in her head, causing her to bolt from her chair. “I need a pencil! Anybody got a pencil? It's really urgent” she yelled. “I got a pencil, Hadassah” Jemma, her co-worker answered, tossing the pencil to her. “Thanks Jemma” Hadassah smiled as she caught the pencil. She rushed to her seat and frantically scribbled and doodled a rough sketch of the face that came to her mind. It wasn't exactly clear as she was terrible at sketching, she always had been. But she remembered the stitch scar on the right side of the man's unusually white face, his red eyes, browless face and death glare.
