As we entered the office, Hannah’s assistant barely spared us a glance before motioning us toward the sleek glass doors of her office. “Right on time,” Hannah said as we stepped inside. She was seated behind a large desk, exuding power in a deceptively calm yet sharp way. “Hannah,” Nolan greeted, his voice smooth and controlled. “This is my wife, Anastasia.” Hannah’s piercing blue eyes flicked to me, scanning, assessing. “The woman of the hour,” she said, leaning back in her chair. “I’ve heard a lot about you.” “All good things, I hope,” I said smoothly, taking the seat across from her without waiting for an invitation.

Who the fuck is Hannah?” Daniel sighed heavily on the other end. “His ex,” he said flatly. “Okay,” I murmured, processing the information.

No sooner had I settled into my chair than Anna followed me inside. “Good morning, Mr. Voss,” she said with her usual polite smile. “Morning, Anna,” I replied. She held her tablet close and said, “Mr. Jonathan reached out again.” The sound of that name made me groan. Jonathan Monroe. The man loved to linger around trouble. Anna noticed and smiled lightly. “I assume he’s already contacted you personally?” “Yeah,” I said, pulling the file out of my briefcase. “He came to my house yesterday. Dropped this on me.”

**Ch.7: The Security Guards Fetch Hanna** At noon, after her shift, Hanna sat in the cafeteria, opening the email Morgan had sent her. A skeptical laugh accompanied each line her eyes scanned. The supposed assassination attempt he referred to served merely as a pretext for a list of impositions that ultimately catered to his own interests.

Hanna won’t even look at me when I place food on her plate. She ate while I watched her, sipping my coffee. “Stop staring at me.” “Then, talk to me so I won’t stare at your face.” I bargained. You are repressing me, and I hate it!”

“Call him,” Cloe said. “Right now. I don’t care that it’s late.” Mac was already dialling. The phone screen still glowed with Jonah’s message, the words sitting there in the dark of the bedroom like something that couldn’t wait for morning. He said his name was Daniel Pierce. He said he was Hannah’s father. Jonah answered on the second ring, his voice low, careful, the voice of someone who’d been sitting with something heavy and was relieved to finally hand part of it over.
