The Wrong Bride
She kissed both children, whispered a short prayer, and stood.
Grandma followed her to the door.
“You’re going to your father, aren’t you?”
Pearl nodded, holding her bag.
“He called me home. He said he’s retiring.”
Grandma took her hand gently.
“You’ve always been brave, Pearl. You were brave to leave, and you’re brave to go back. Don’t forget that.”
Pearl’s voice shook.
“Thank you, Grandma, for taking us in.”
