Lily's blue notebook was lying open in the center. Julian looked down at the exposed white page. There was only one sentence written in careful, five-year-old handwriting. We are a family. Julian stared at the five penciled words. He did not move a single muscle. He stood in the silent kitchen and read the devastating sentence twice. He finally looked up. He walked slowly toward the heavy stove. He picked up the stainless steel kettle. He filled it with cold water. He turned on the gas burner. He pulled a ceramic mug from the high cabinet. He selected Aurora's specific herbal tea blend from the pantry.

"That's not worthless, Aurelia. That's brave." I blink back tears. "Thank you." Our coffee arrives and we spend the next two hours talking. About books, about life, about dreams and fears and everything in between. Julian tells me about growing up in his family's shadow, always feeling like he had to prove himself. I tell him about being homeschooled, about missing out on a normal childhood. I don't tell him about the library incident. Don't tell him about the cruel stranger or the slap or the two weeks of hiding.

The only person in this entire school who had ever shown me any kindness. Cassius rolled his eyes. "Oh, come on, Julian. You always ruin the fun." Julian bent down, picking up my books effortlessly before handing them to me. "Come on, Lorien," he said softly. I hesitated, then took the books, gripping them tightly. "Thanks," I whispered. Julian didn’t respond. He just walked beside me as we moved down the hall, leaving Cassius and his pack behind. But I could still feel Cassius’s gaze burning into my back.

His footsteps are too fast , too quiet, predator-quiet . I stand frozen in the middle of the living room , clutching Leo so tightly he whimpers . Julian comes back , face carved from stone, gun in his hand . I didn’t even know he carried one . “Clear,” he says , voice flat. “But we’re not staying .” Leo’s arms tighten . “I don’t wanna go. I want my bed .” Julian kneels in front of us, gun lowered, eyes on Leo. “Hey, buddy.” His voice cracks, but he forces it steady . “We’re going on an adventure, okay ? Like dinosaurs hiding from the meteor . We gotta be super quiet and super fast.”

Julian is still staring across the diner with an expression I've never seen before, pure excitement mixed with nervousness. "You look like you're about to pass out," I say, setting the food down. "That's Elijah Ward," Julian says again, like he still can't believe it. "I know. You already told me." I slide into the booth across from him. "Captain of your favorite team, right?"

But Aiden sat there, unbothered, waiting. Julian bent over the page, pencil scratching slowly. His numbers were messy, but when he pushed the paper back, the answer was correct. Aiden tapped the margin. “See? You can do it.” Julian raised a brow. “You sound surprised.” “Not surprised,” Aiden said. “Just proving a point.” Julian tilted his head, studying him. “You’re different, you know that?” “I hear that a lot.” “Not like a compliment.” Julian smirked. “You don’t flinch. You don’t bend. You’re like…” He trailed off, searching for a word, then shrugged. “Doesn’t matter.”

Kiki remained gleeful, her petite face made stunning by her wavy hair and exquisite Gucci suit. “Julian, you’re still the same as before! You’re cold on the outside but warm-hearted on the inside. You mistook me as the one who sent you the love letter and even recited the letter before everyone in school, declaring I was the one who wrote it. Yet, you secretly bought a week’s worth of breakfast for me.” In everyone’s eyes, Julian was the ice prince who didn’t bother himself with the trivialities of the mortal world. No one would believe that he was capable of apologizing and even buying someone breakfast.

Julian’s eyes widened as he read every single word on the screen with care. Even after going through it all, the shock on his face remained. He never imagined that the woman he had rescued by chance would turn out to be a royal princess.
