But then I began to grow up . . . and people—customers—started to notice me.” Sia held her breath, as she looked at his face. He was looking ahead, a faraway look on his face. She could almost see that lost, little boy in him now, and it broke her heart to think that Julian had been through so much, and she hadn’t been able to help him.

I was tempted to shred the leaflet or better still, throw it straight at that stupid, mean boy’s face. Somehow, Dina failed to read the room and decided now was the best time to approach Julian to….. Chat? Flirt? Talk? Or maybe she's just stupid. “Hey, Julie, here…” she said, handing him a book. “I paid someone to do the science assignment for you.” there was a proud smile on her face. He was scrolling through his phone, barely glancing up at her. “Thanks. It’s Julian,” he murmured, not even bothering to collect the book.

"El? What... what's wrong?" "Excuse me," I said, my voice sounding completely flat and formal, like an automated machine. "Could you please step aside? I'm already late for my first class." Julian blinked a few times, looking like he couldn't quite believe his ears. "El, it's me. Julian. Julian Vega. Do you... do you not recognize me because I don't wear glasses anymore? Or because I got taller?" He tried to chuckle, taking another step forward in an attempt to thaw the sudden ice between us. "I know I've changed a lot, but there's no way you actually forgot your childhood best friend, right? I—"

"How did you... how could you get here?! Who told you about this place?!" The little girl stared at Julian with curiosity; there was no fear in her eyes, only pure inquisitiveness. "Mommy, who is that man? Why is he crying?" Jennifer trembled violently; she almost lost her balance. "Mommy’s little princess, go inside now. Find Auntie Martha. Quickly, darling! Do not come out until Mommy calls you!" "Alright, Mommy, I will go in and find Auntie Martha." The little girl went straight into the house, after which Jennifer turned to face Julian with overflowing rage. She approached and stood directly in front of Julian, who was still kneeling on the ground, garden dust clinging to his palms.

I looked at my text thread from after lunch with Julian. Julian: Today really helped. Thank you for listening and understanding. Me: Of course. That's what friends are for. How are you feeling about tomorrow? Julian: Nervous. I don't know if I can do this. Me: You can. You're stronger than you think. Julian: I just wish... He didn't finish the sentence. The three dots appeared and disappeared several times. Then finally: Never mind. I'll figure it out. I stared at that message. I wanted to ask what he wished but I didn't.

"I like the new school…but I miss Molly…and Uncle Roger too! Can we go visit him?" I remembered Julian vaguely mentioning his little crush Molly before. The same girl who shared her treats with him and the reason he got in trouble with me for spending all his money. I didn't know he would miss going to his old school because of her. Julian had adjusted very well to the pack life and the pack was telling him, slowly but surely, about the existence of the supernatural world.

They didn’t know about the dark room, the leather wall, or how my body had betrayed me for a man who despised my existence. I could still feel the weight of Nico’s hand on my skin. I adjusted the strap of my backpack, trying to shrink inside my coat. I just needed to get to Biology. Just one hour of looking at cells under a microscope, at least cells didn’t gossip. "Elena!" The voice came from behind me. I turned around. Julian was jogging across the wet grass of the quad. He looked effortlessly perfect, even at 8:00 AM. He wore a camel coat over a white shirt, and his golden hair caught the weak morning light.

“That’s correct.” “Why?” Julian studied me for a moment. “You’re different from the people I usually deal with.” “That sounds suspicious.” “Why?” “Because I’m pretty sure you’re surrounded by a lot of impressive people.” “I am.” “And yet you’re curious about the girl who accidentally married you.” “You didn’t accidentally marry me.” “You know what I mean.” Julian took a slow sip of wine before answering. “Most people in my world are predictable.” “And I’m not?” “No.”
