He hadn’t looked up from his book—a hardcover about deep-sea creatures that he’d been reading for three days, the spine already cracked from the number of times he’d pressed it flat to study the illustrations.
“Did you know,” Lucas said, “that the colossal squid has the largest eyes of any living creature? Each one is the size of a dinner plate.”
“Nobody asked, Lucas,” Chloe said.
“Nobody needs to ask. Knowledge is free.”
We all giggled.
I scraped the burned eggs into the trash and started new ones. Harrison leaned against the counter beside me, close enough that his hip touched mine.
“I’ll do toast,” he offered.
“You’ll sit down and supervise.”
