I turned back toward Ashvin and found him still watching me. The noise in the arena faded. All I could see were his eyes, dark and focused. His gaze held me captive. Another shout from the arena broke the spell, and my gaze jerked toward the ring. I froze. Kai was stepping into the ring. “What is he doing there?” I whispered, but Ashvin didn’t answer. Kai’s opponent was Kairo’s Beta. The whistle blew. Kai lunged first, slashing at the Beta. The Beta twisted, swinging a counterstrike that caught Kai’s shoulder. The scent of blood hit the air, and my stomach twisted.

Their other roommate, Jake, was at the library, and the small dorm room was quiet except for the hum of the mini fridge and the distant sound of music from the floor below. Kai was a senior. He was twenty-two, six foot two, with a lean, muscular build that he maintained with obsessive gym sessions and a strict diet. He had short black hair, sharp features, and dark, penetrating eyes that always seemed to be assessing everything around him.
