He rolled his tongue against his back molars, a smirk playing on his lips—part roguish charm, part unhinged malice. He exhaled a thick cloud of grey smoke, the ash falling unheeded to the floor.

Kayla’s eyes widened in shock. Leon didn’t think. He just acted. He swung the clippers straight up and pressed them firmly into the center of Kayla’s perfectly styled blonde hair — right at the front of her scalp, just above her forehead. *BZZZZZZZZZZ—* The blades carved a brutal, uneven path straight down the middle of her head. A thick, wide strip of golden hair fell away instantly, fluttering to the stone tiles like dead leaves. Pale skin gleamed underneath in a shocking white line that ran from her hairline toward her crown.

The obsidian blade goes through the grey Harvester’s plate as though the plate is warm wax, and the cut does not slow at the armor the way every law of the physical world says it should, because the engine is at full and full means the blade carries my entire frequency into the steel ahead of the edge, and the steel forgets, for one impossible instant, how to be solid.

He says, or sort of asks as he stands taller, his expression is contorted and hard to read, but his words are slightly slurred. Kai wobbles towards me and smiles a deranged smile as I take him in and my breath hitches as I see blood drip down his pinky finger. “You get to watch me die today, Rhett,” Kai says in a half crazed voice. “You won’t love me back and my parents hate me, so I don’t need to be here any fucking more.” Kai says, stumbling into my arms. The razorblade clenched in his right fist and the long bloody slice down the other make me pale and gasp in horror.

‎ ‎A petal snapped outward—unsheathing a small, glistening blade. ‎ ‎Castelle gasped, her eyes widening. “It’s a knife?” ‎ ‎Kane held it delicately between his fingers, the gleam of the steel catching the light. “A stiletto blade. Balanced. Razor-sharp. Easy to hide.” ‎ ‎He pressed it back into its sheath, returning it to her hair with gentle fingers. ‎ ‎“Why?” she asked, breathless. “Why would you give me something like this?” ‎ ‎“Because, Castelle…” His eyes darkened as he cupped her cheek. “I won’t always be in the room. And if someone ever tries to hurt you, you won’t beg for help. You’ll bleed them.”

I whispered. Kael hugged me tightly. "You'll never have to again," he promised. Tracing patterns in the new hair on Kael's chest and stomach, I couldn't help but smile as I "erased" them and started again. His laugh vibrated through his body as he pulled the blanket over our heads to watch me. "I'll get it all shaved off soon," he said. "I don't know, I kinda like it," I replied with a grin. He snorted. "Well, tell one of the other two because I've been dreaming of a razor since I saw the one in Teddy's shower."
