When I Walked Away
“She isn’t doing too well. She’s been calling your name in her sleep during her lunch breaks. Please come back. Don’t stay mad at her anymore.”
The words sounded sincere, but I could tell that the phone call was clearly something Lucy had arranged.
“In that case, could you pass along a message for me?” I asked calmly.
Right after I spoke, I heard an echo. They’d switched to speakerphone, likely because she was right there, listening.
I paused and then continued, “Please tell her thank you and that we’re already divorced. My new girlfriend and I are doing great. Unless there’s something truly urgent, please don’t contact me again. I’m worried my girlfriend might get jealous.”
