Killian roared, the sound of his voice vibrating in the small chamber even without his Alpha resonance. ​He didn't wait for a tactical plan or a signal from me. He lunged at Vane with the primal speed of a hunter, but the Iron King wasn't as fragile as his elderly frame suggested. Vane moved with a mechanical, jerky speed that shouldn't have been possible for a human in a Dead Zone, dodging Killian’s strike with an unnatural fluidity. Before Killian could reset his stance, Vane drove a concealed, high-voltage taser into the Alpha’s side. The blue sparks arched across Killian's skin, and he collapsed to the grass, his muscles spasming in uncontrollable agony.

His accomplice circled around to the driver's seat with the stealthy lethality of a tiger.

They only knew the hunger for the Catalyst. Killian moved before I could even raise my gun. He was a blur of lethal grace, a shadow dancing through the red emergency lights. He didn't waste bullets. He opened throats. He snapped necks. Each kill was a silent vow of protection, a brutal display of the obsession that bound him to me. I fired my suppressed Glock, picking off a Reaper who tried to lung at Julian from a side door. The recoil felt like a heartbeat against my palm. "Don't look at them, Sienna!" Killian roared, spinning me around a corner as a spray of bullets riddled the wall where I had just been standing. "Keep your eyes on me!"
