The little girl was staring at the opening in the floor. Pure terror on her face. “What is it?” Adrian demanded. Elara’s voice shook. “It’s not just a staircase.” Silence. The golden light pulsed. Once. Twice. Then something moved in the depths below. Something enormous. Something alive. And slowly, from far beneath Blackthorn Mountain, a colossal golden eye opened and looked directly up at us.

And now, here he was, pressed against me, shielding me like some damn hero. “Stay down,” he growled, low and rough. But it wasn’t his voice that stunned me. It was his eyes. For a split second, as the strobe lights hit his face, his golden irises flared. Not like colored contacts. Not like a trick of the light. They glowed, wild and primal. With a faint image of a wolf in them. I sucked in a breath. My nightmares. The same golden flash that haunted me. But wolves do not exist.

"He called Aurelius an old friend. He talked about the prophecy like he was afraid of it." Rowan's jaw clenched. "What did the golden wolf look like? When he shifted to human form?" I tried to remember through the haze of terror and pain. "Younger than the wolves here. Dark hair, maybe brown or black. But his eyes—" I stopped. "His eyes were amber. They glowed amber." "Fuck." Rowan stood abruptly, pacing away from me. "Amber eyes aren't common, and a golden wolf with that coloring—" "What?" I demanded. "Rowan, what is it?"

I darted towards a window, my heart hammering. Outside, a scene of horrifying violence unfolded. Dark, snarling forms, larger and more brutal than any rogue wolves I’d ever heard of, swarmed the courtyard, clashing with our warriors. Their eyes glowed with a malevolent green light, and their fur was almost black, like shadows given form. The air filled with the scent of blood and something else, something cold and sharp, like ancient hatred. As I stared at their glowing eyes, a pulse of heat flared from my own hands, a flash of golden light that was gone in an instant.

A single golden eye slowly opened within the darkness. And it was watching.

“Yes. Even though she appeared as your naked body, her voice and more so her eyes ensured no mistaking her for you or Emilia.” I suppose that makes sense. “So we had parallel experiences. What was the color of Light’s eyes?” I asked. “Bright silver, shining like the moon. They darkened and brightened with her mood. What about Darkness?” Alec cocked his head. “The blinding yellow-orange of the sun. Sometimes it was hard to look him in the eyes, like looking into the sun. Strange given he’s Darkness. I would have thought his eyes would be dark or like the moon.” I frowned.

Not flickering the way firelight makes shadows dance, but truly alive, shifting with intention, consolidating from formless darkness into something with mass. Eyes appeared first. Golden. Bright as twin suns. Burning with a ferocity that made the hearth look like a candle. They hovered in the darkness, unblinking, fixed on me with an intensity that stole the breath from my nonexistent lungs. Then the shadow moved.

“I once predicted that Elara’s pup would be a defective spawn. Today, I’ll prove my prophecy right.” Damian lifted the cage lid. Inside was my black werewolf pup, already showing signs of awakening. “Damian!” I shouted, swooping down from the rooftop. “Perfect timing! Watch closely!” he laughed, then lifted his own golden pup. The golden pup was restless and eager to move. “Today, you shall witness the truth! I am a Golden Lycan, and my word is law!” The golden pup’s fur began to crack with glowing lines, radiating a blinding light that made it impossible for anyone to keep their eyes open.

Prayed for blackout sleep. Suddenly I’m standing in some wild field, moon shining, mist curling around my feet. Out of the fog came two wolves. One dark as obsidian, one this blinding gold. The dark one’s eyes, I’d know them anywhere. Dante. Just looking at him, I felt it. That pull. That possessive, electric thing. Mine. The golden wolf just watched, quiet and heartbreakingly patient. Dominic. His eyes didn’t ask, didn't beg, just a silent ache that felt ancient.
