A few minutes later, the worker arrives with a small white box. “Do you have any cases for this one in stock?” William asks him. The worker nods and directs us over to the wall of cases, all of them seem to cover the colour of the phone. As if William can read my mind he picks up a clear case that has glitter in it. “What do you think of this one? It means the phone will be protected and you will still see the colour”

I would ask Cindy to go with me later today, so I could wear a pair for the party later that night. Daniel gave me phone cases, which I thought was terrific, especially since they all had some form of the Snow White character from the books and movies on them. Heathcliff gave me journals. "So you can write down your thoughts," he said. They were beautiful. Some were leather, others had pretty designs and flowers on them. Professor Pops presented me with sixteen pairs of Converse in an array of shades from bright orange to teal and lime green to lemon yellow. I loved them so much.

"Here." *You bought me a Kindle? she asks, amazed. "Why? I already have one." 'I bought one for each of my cars so you don't have to worry about carrying it everywhere. “We improvise it live.” Pauly handed her a slim, battered paperback—Mockingbird, cover worn, pages gutted to hold a wafer-thin transceiver and a micro-SD slot. “Your new copy. Same weight as the real one. Press the title twice if you’re burned; it wipes your last three hours and plays an audiobook. She pointed to a sleek watch on a stand and a display of AirPod cases. “This one’s our most popular. Simple, modern. And those cases are made from vegan leather, if that matters.” I picked both. The watch was silver, with a black strap. Not too bold. Just… him. The AirPod case was navy blue—clean, neat, nothing too loud. “Great choices,” she said, and I nodded like I knew that already. She wrapped them for me in matte black paper, tied with a gold ribbon. “You want a card?”

In the next few days, her life is going to change forever. As she rips off the wrapping paper, I tell her, “It’s fully charged, and I uploaded your favorite version.” A smile spreads across her face when she realizes what it is. Shannen enjoys reading so much. But her electronic book is so old I am surprised it still works. “Not only is it the latest model, but it also has a back-light for reading in the dark.” I brag. She turns on the e-reader and I go to close the curtains. I sat next to her to show her how it works. She squeals with delight as the device lights up. I could see Shannen’s beaming smile. I knew then I had chosen a perfect present for her.

"My dearest Bai, I cannot believe the trouble you’ve landed yourself in. Perhaps our nosy neighbor was right, but that is a topic for another time. I will do what I can from here to ensure no one discovers your involvement. But, if the king has not yet sent out news of the incident, that’s a good sign for now.
