Kayla Turi POV “Is everyone in this damn book insane?!” I slammed the four-hundred-page book onto the floor. The thud echoed in my tiny apartment, making the glass of water on my desk tremble. I stomped toward the dispenser, filled my cup, and hissed, “Aaaah!” as the hot water stung my index finger. I blew on it furiously. “Don’t tell me her bad luck is rubbing off on me now?” I just couldn’t wrap my head around how an author could enjoy torturing her main character with an army of side characters who lived only to crush her.

I walked past him, stepped into the elevator, and pressed the close button without the slightest hint of reluctance. I arrived at Blair's house half an hour later. I told my best friend about my miscarriage. She hugged me and comforted me, coaxing me for hours. I never once bothered texting Caleb the entire time. Instead, he sent me a text consisting of a single question mark. I ignored it. He shot me another text the following day, saying, "The breakfast they serve out here tastes horrible." I hadn’t expected that, so I jerked back in surprise, but then stilled when I felt the soft brush of her lips against my cheek. “Sorry, I didn’t expect that,” I said dryly, leaning over to give her the same treatment. She beamed at me. “It’s okay. I just—” Her smile was infectious. “Well, I wanted to give you a proper greeting.” I knew my eyebrows had to be kissing my hairline at that. “Any reason in particular?” Her smile morphed into a grin. “For daring not to go to confession.” Ah. I rolled my eyes. “Aidan Sr. nearly had a conniption, didn’t he?” Things had derailed after the homophobic prick thing, that was for sure.

And that made me feel like… Kiss her. I heard my brain telling me to move, but I stopped myself. Kiss her, damn it! This time, before I could stop myself, my hand had reached out to her face, pulling her close to mine. It was a split second decision, and I just had to take that chance.
