Snap. Nikos howls but doesn't drop the weapon. He bites Drakon’s shoulder, tearing at the flesh. I scramble out of bed. I’m naked, shivering, adrenaline flooding my veins. "Drakon!" I look for a weapon. My knife is in my boot by the door. Too far. I grab the heavy brass lamp from the nightstand. I rush toward them. Drakon is on his back. Nikos is straddling him, trying to drive the shiv into Drakon’s eye. Drakon is holding him back, his muscles straining, veins bulging in his neck.

“I won’t fail.” I reached through the bars. I took the knife from his hand. I felt how heavy it was. I tested the edge with my thumb. It was sharp enough to cut skin easily. I gave it back to him. “Hide it well,” I said. “Stay out of sight until the moment. One strike. Then run. Come back here only when it’s finished. When Faye is dead and the pack is screaming my name.” Kael took the blade. He put it back in his boot. “I’ll do it.”
