The display flickered out into absolute darkness as the internal circuitry shorted out in a spray of tiny sparks. Julian let out a sharp, agonized shriek, his body collapsing over the desk as he clutched his right hand against his chest. The impact had completely shattered the delicate bones of his knuckles, blood instantly seeping through his fingers, staining the dark wood beneath him as the true silence of his total ruin filled the room.

The arena is silent. Ejected. Possible suspension. He doesn’t look at anyone as he skates off. He looks at me. I find him in the tunnel twenty minutes later, sitting on the concrete bench with his head back against the wall and blood dripping from his knuckles onto the floor. Knuckles split and bleeding through the wrap he did himself, badly. I grab his hands without asking and start cleaning them properly. Antiseptic. Gauze. My fingers are gentle around his swollen joints and he watches my hands work and says nothing.

Glenn looked over at his friend uncertainly but nodded. When it happened Carine barely saw him move. Glenn raised the knife and brought his hand back to strike, lashed out and found his hand trapped in the grip of the dark clad man. With his other hand the newcomer sent a slashing blow downwards, snapping the ulna and radius bones with a sickening crack. Carine looked at him in horror as Glenn screamed, grabbing his arm. She could see something white jutting from the dripping wound. Jesus! She thought as bile rose in her throat.

I looked down at my hands, shocked. My hands were cold as ice and just as white, with veins of black snaking through my skin. The tips of my fingers were black too, almost like Barry's hand. Almost. My eyes were wide. As I watched, the dark veins and paleness faded, and my skin went back to its usual hue.
