The Unchosen Mate
She said, still not looking at him.
“He said they were grandma’s,” I answered for him.
“They were,” she said, raising the small box in front of me with both of her hands, then propped it open for me to see the contents. “And this was mine.”
I gasped. Loudly. A massive amethyst, shaped like a teardrop, hung from a glimmering silver chair. It’s surfaces were smooth and glittering, capturing the light and casting a dazzling disco of light upon my mother’s face. “Mom!” I finally breathed, raising a finger to touch it. The stone was as large as my thumbnail and surrounded by dozens of tiny diamonds, each emitting their own light from perfectly polished angles.
