“Are you part of his thunder?” The dragon seemed confused for a second, and then, with no warning, he opened his mouth, and fire shot out of his mouth. Nya grabbed the shield from behind her back and swiveled it around, dodging out of the way, but it was only after she moved that she realized the dragon wasn’t aiming the fire at her. She slammed into the hole there and even as the fire raced across her one side she managed to slam it again and came up into the room. I heard from the news that there was a fire magical girl from Keydoria who intentionally burned down Schwitz Forest in Clonovia, right?” Maruyama asked the man.

I cough and back up. After a few forced coughs, I blink to clear my vision and I peered back out the window and thought my eyes were playing tricks on me. I saw people from my pack scrambling around. The screams were coming from different directions. I could hear more and more screams as people started running towards my house. I tried to peer beyond the buildings to see where the smoke was coming from. It looked like the cloud was being blown from the North. Maybe one of the houses caught fire? If so, why is so many people fleeing and heading towards the packhouse?

Shadows flicker red beneath my door now, dancing like cruel spirits. “Run!” The word echoes in my skull. The door bursts inward in a spray of sparks and splintered wood. Flames roar behind a towering silhouette. A man steps through the fire. I cannot see his face — only the outline of him carved in burning light. And his eyes. They glow. Not with reflection. With power. The world fractures into red and gold. Heat devours everything. The scream tears from my throat— I wake choking on smoke that isn’t there. My room is dark. Quiet. Whole.

I only stop the stream of fire when Ember tries to blast me with hers. “Do it, Kenna,” she says, asking me to kill her. “Gladly,” I snarl, sending another concussion bomb of fire and hatred at her and Merellien. She screams falling to the earth as Merellien burns alive on her back. Then, I turn my attention to Nylion who thought it would be a good idea to try and run from me. I send a stream of fire behind him, chasing him as he runs, toying with him the way he toyed with Laiken and Naevys. When I finally tire of playing with him, I light his legs on fire, watching him burn slowly.
