She walked over to the tall shelf near the window and ran her fingers along the spines of dusty books before pulling one out. “I guess,” she said, turning back to me, “we’ll have to start from the basics.” She handed me the book. The cover was old, the edges worn. Gold lettering barely visible.

The first light of dawn barely pierced the dense frost, covered trees surrounding the camp, casting long, crooked shadows that stretched across the snow like grasping fingers. Ice clung to every branch, every needle, transforming the forest into a cathedral of frozen bone and glass. Lyra stood at the edge of the clearing, her breath shallow, her amber eyes fixed on the pale horizon. Each exhale formed a soft cloud that vanished almost instantly, swallowed by the cold. The frost bit at her skin, seeping through layers of fur and leather, but it was nothing compared to the chill creeping steadily down her spine.

She filtered through them, trying to find the perfect one to start with before she stumbled upon one with a very catchy cover. There was a lady or girl with a red hoodie covering almost half of her face with other features like a bowing girl, held down by chains and then surrounded by lit candles. In total, the cover looked really captivating. She brought out the book before shutting the drawer. She wore her glasses and glanced at the book, Bound By The Erstwhile Chains, read the title. She turned it over and saw the author's name, Lara .A. Falowo and a bit about her. Fascinated by the prologue, she dived into the book, flipping pages after pages until she heard a voice come through the inte

The trees were skeletal, stripped of bark and life, their branches reaching like claws toward a sky that refused to shine. Snow fell in slow spirals, but it wasn’t pure—it was ash. The ground beneath her boots crunched with bone and ice, the remnants of flame-bearers who had come before. Luna walked beside her, silent, her mark glowing like a beacon in the dark.

Most of the books are good old boring history books but there are a few that caught my attention. I reached for a familiar book and I flipped the cover open to see my own handwriting. My eyes slightly widen when I realized that it was the same book I had given Frost when she had locked herself in her temporary chambers after Dorian had attacked her. I can't believe she kept it. A small smile crawled its way up to my lips as I looked back at the shelf and spotted more of the books I'd gifted her. She's even kept the large book about the lands beyond the five Kingdoms.
