I never dreamed I could ever own actual copies of his work, including his new releases. “Are you crying?!” Jazz looks horrified.

CHAPTER 134 Clara’s POV The afternoon sun hung high in the sky as I stepped out of the bookstore carrying two new books pressed against my chest. One was about corporate governance. The other was about shareholder litigation. A few weeks ago, I wouldn’t have even understood the titles. Now I was spending my free time reading them voluntarily. The realization almost made me laugh. If someone had told me six months ago that I would willingly spend hours studying business law, I would have assumed they were insane.

I could see it was something big. -I said, "Open it without fear. It's something nice and I think you'll love it," my now boyfriend told me. I opened it very carefully, so as not to break the wrapping. They were books, you could see them clearly. When I took them out of the wrapping paper, I saw that they were law books. I wanted to be a lawyer and the most expensive books were right there in front of my eyes. Now that was the best gift in the world. I was going to read them from head to toe. With so much joy inside I ran to hug him.

Lily took off her glasses, but her face was still full of pleasure. "But this book, The Caged Bird and the Lion, is just magnificent. There were two paintings beside each other on the wall, one was an abstract brush of charcoal and brown that looked like a man's portrait while the other was a minimalist one that I couldn't put together what it actually meant.

“For what, exactly?” I didn’t answer. Eva smiled mockingly. “Claire… you don’t think you still have a career, do you?” My grip around my folder tightened. “I think it’s cute you haven’t given up.” Eva said, as she walked towards my bookshelf. She picked up one of my law textbooks, and started flipping through it with disinterest. “Law?” She turned to face me, then laughed. “Isn’t that… ambitious?” I didn’t respond. My quietness seemed to annoy her more than anger would.

We just kept existing in the same space and let whatever was happening happen at whatever pace it decided to happen at. It was the most uncontrolled thing I had done in years. I was surprised to find I did not hate it. Monday he left a book on the kitchen counter. Not a note with it. Just the book. A biography of a woman who had built one of the first female led law firms in New York in the nineteen sixties. I had mentioned her once in a conversation two weeks ago. One sentence. I had not thought he was paying that level of attention. I took it to my room and read fifty pages before I went to sleep.
