Kira circled uncertainly, her steps slow, her blade trembling. “Together!” Mira snapped at her, but Kira faltered. Trixie’s eyes narrowed — she saw the fear, the doubt. She pressed forward, her spear sweeping low. Kira stumbled back, nearly dropping her blade. The crowd roared, their voices echoing off the stone. Some shouted Trixie’s name, others cried for blood. But above it all, the pups’ small cries rang faintly from where Lana held them near the doorway, safe but watchful. At that sound, Trixie’s heart surged. She spun, catching Mira’s strike with the shaft, then drove the butt of her spear into Mira’s stomach. Mira doubled over, air rushing from her lungs.
