Dare’s eyes flickered. “I’m taking you back with me,” he said, as if that alone could bend her will, could erase the past weeks of grief and betrayal and the image of her father’s lifeless eyes.
Sky’s laugh came out. “Like hell you are,” she ground out, stepping back. “You’ve done enough—haven’t you?” Her voice cracked, eyes bright with unshed tears. “Just—just leave, Dare. Please.”
His face twisted with pain, he took a step forward, hands reaching but hesitating, falling uselessly at his sides. “I can’t,” he whispered, voice breaking at the edges. “I can’t just leave you. You’re not safe here.”
