"It is time for the stories, no?" He picked up a well-worn book of fables, sitting on the edge of Leo’s bed. Usually, this was the highlight of their day, the one moment where the "Nanny" could almost feel the warmth of his children’s love. But tonight, the air was cold. Leo didn't look up. He shoved a plastic soldier forward with a violent jerk. "Go away, Antonella." Caleb flinched as if he’d been struck again. "Leo? What is wrong, mi hijo? We were going to read about the brave knight and the dragon."

The pain he had felt the first time would be nothing compared to what was in store for him this next time. “I’m here if you need someone to talk to,” offered Leah, even though she too was out of her depth when it came to werewolves. She truly hoped that Caleb was able to learn enough from the books at the store to help him. She was however going to ask her mother if she knew of another werewolf who was able to take Caleb under his wing… or should she rather say paw?

“Meet Misfit,” Luke says helpfully, though he’s already halfway to the window, peeking out at the helicopter pad like there might be something interesting going on. There’s not. His own stuffed toy is dangling at his side like a discarded piece of cloth. The poor dinosaur doesn’t get an introduction. “He’s a secret demon warlock and knows how to use a sword.” Leyla squeals. “That’s so cool!” “And this is Princess Pixelbrain,” Lili says, proudly holding up her bunny like a sacred offering. “She has her own tiara, does ballet, and probably runs an empire. Also, she likes cheese puffs.”

I could use my black flames, but there’s no guarantee that someone won’t see me. There has to be another way out of this. Maybe I can use the help of the demon princes? Mammon is too emotional to be of any help. Belphegor is not in a pack with me, but I have some favors from him that could help. Unfortunately, the demon prince of sloth looked traumatized by bugs. What about Leviathan? That’s right! There were sprinklers in the area. Bugs hate water because it would wet their wings. Leviathan could activate them with his manipulation of water!

The couple stared wide-eyed, unable to comprehend the unbelievable turn of events. It wasn't until Felix approached them with the bowl and pointed to its contents that they understood. "This bug is the reason for your son's condition." Felix showed them the bowl. They looked down to see a white, worm-like creature in the bowl, resembling a dead earthworm, completely still. "This creature is extremely rare. It's called a Snowbug. I won't go into the details, but when it encounters a human, it will actively burrow into their body without leaving any wounds.

It's all a fantasy. Fable has been my escape. An unhealthy one. A safe pretend world where I could bury myself. Just like how Zee cried after she finished the final Harry Potter book, or how Jamie bases so much of her worth on the fictional version of herself that lives across a thousand Instagram pics, in the comments and likes of a thousand strangers. Just carefully constructed lies to comfort and lull. Dreams.

I have way too much on my mind. Mrs. Leyton was engaged to Bea’s brother. And Bea blames Mrs. Leyton for his death. Add to that, her slimy boyfriend Robert was wearing a silver ring with some sort of markings on it. There’s a deeper connection somewhere here. And I have no doubt any more that it’s linked to Fable, and the myth of the five princes. “No, don’t open it, it’s a trap!” Zee screams at the TV, just as the hero opens his locker and a mountain of packing peanuts falls out onto him.

Raina raised an eyebrow and smiled sweetly. “Oh? Then, Mr. Vexley, your obsession sounds like a disease. You should get it treated.” Leif replied calmly, “Incorrect.” Raina asked, “Oh? What part is incorrect?” Leif said in a flat voice, “It’s an incurable disease.” The car fell into silence for a moment before Raina suddenly burst out laughing. “Not bad, I like that answer. I like it a lot. Hahahaha…”

"He’s solved his regeneration problem," Leurel muttered. "Unlike Zydriann."
