Gera nodded and allowed Thaelen to lay them both down on their sides, tucked into each other, sharing what little body warmth they had between them.
“I am a heretic,” Gera whispered, his words slurred by the edge of sleep.
“A heretic,” Thaelen repeated without opening his eyes.
“I refuse to follow the One God.”
“And that makes you a heretic?”
“It does.”
“And this is what happens to heretics?”
“No,” Gera shook his head with a sigh. “This is just the beginning of what happens to heretics.”
Thaelen’s clothes began to dry, aided by the heat of Gera’s infection-fever, and with the comfort of the human’s heartbeat beneath the palm of his hand Thaelen drifted into sleep, waking into morning’s light
