Freya's voice cut through my concentration and I closed my fist, letting the globe of light vanish into thin air. Perspiration beaded my forehead as I used the back of my hand to wipe at my face. The longer I held onto the light, the harder it was on my body. According to Freya, the light was my body turning the energy inside my veins into light energy. It seemed like pretty basic Physics class, however, no one told me that holding onto the light and keeping it glowing for more than ten seconds sucked the energy out of my body like a vacuum cleaner.

The building's silhouettes suddenly became the dark night sky and the lights from their windows suddenly were twinkling. "Isn't that beautiful?" I asked when I saw a broken stoplight, the red light was blinking and the green and yellow once didn't seem to work. I thought it was aesthetically pleasing, under the gloom of the night, along the empty streets and silently passing cars. The slow blinking of that stop light seemed to harmonize with the quietness of the evening. I looked at Edgar and he was frowning at the stop light. "Pretty much could cause traffic, goodness, that should be fixed," he said and I rolled my eyes at him.

Steady. Neah watches. Her eyes track the glow. Then I do something Elena always told me not to. I push the light outward. It extends from my hand like a pulse wave. Invisible to normal sight but tangible if you know how to feel it. The energy washes over Neah. I watch her eyes widen. Her breath catches. "What is that?" she asks. "I do not have a name for it. But it is part of what we are. The light is not just cosmetic. It is energy. It can heal. It can shield. And in theory, it can fight."
