He’d have fought otherwise when Jacob had assaulted him. He lay meekly next to her but his eyes were lively and another growl tore from his slightly parted lips. She tried not to shiver from the sight of his sharp fangs.

Then not thin. Then the light under the far door changed from dark to orange and the temperature in the sealed vault spiked so fast my skin registered it before my mind did. Gavin was already facing the far door with his weapon raised. The orange light moved in the gap at the floor, alive and growing, and it reflected in his dark eyes as he turned to look at the walls around us. The room was getting warmer by the second.

Varein howls, the sound shattering branches from the trees. I stagger to my feet and join them. Kai is already there, Kaia too, her light flaring against Lyss’s darkness. The three of us; dark, light, and steel, strike in unison. My blade bites deep this time, Kai’s magic explodes in a burst of freezing wind, and Kaia’s light drives straight into Varein’s core. For a heartbeat, I think we might have him. Then his laughter rolls over us again. “You are fire and frost and fury,” he says, retreating into the shadows as if the world itself is letting him pass. “But you are not ready.”

The battle became both chaotic and terrifying because of its unpredictable nature.
