Deborah had said, though they both knew she had already been sneaking glances at her textbooks when no one was watching. Just like every night since she had gotten there four days ago, Liam cuddled her in his large bed and read funny stories to her until she could laugh no more and fall asleep in his arms. He had an entire collection of 6 books now, everything from silly jokes to absurd short stories. Some of them were terrible, so bad they circled back around to being funny again. Last night, he had read her a story about a man who accidentally joined the circus and ended up as a terrible clown. She had laughed so hard her sides hurt, and for those moments, the fear had retreated completely

I glared at him, and he noticed it. “What?” he asked innocently but a smirk is very evident on his lips. “What’s funny?” I asked really mad. He raised a brow; amusement is in his eyes. “I am reading a funny book,” he said. My eyes went down to his book, and it was really scientific so why the hell a funny topic would be there? He’s annoying. I just rolled my eyes and walked out to find a fine book that I can read. I stopped in the history section and stared at the books and without noticing I am now smiling.

Sunlight filtered through a thick blue curtain, illuminating a small room located in the attic. Right by the door was a large wooden desk, painted white, and a swivel chair. Under the desk was a trash can filled to the brim with some papers, soda bottles, and salty snack wrappers. On the desk there was a laptop in a silver casing, a pile of notebooks and books, and a tiny lamp. Above the desk there was a large shelf with a lot of books - from textbooks, through readings, to romances. Here and there, there were photos framed in colorful frames and many other ornaments such as jugs, figurines, etc.

I teased, trying to keep things light. “Only the ones who don’t treat the library like a study hall for gossip.” I heard him shift, probably leaning on the opposite shelf. “You’re different, Lila. You actually read the books.” Heat rose to my face. Good thing he couldn’t see me blushing. “Thanks. Coming from you, that means something. You always seem so focused. Like nothing bothers you.” He was quiet for a moment. “Quiet doesn’t mean unbothered. Just good at hiding it.”

"Hehe~" Suddenly, a light laughter came from the side. The two turned their heads and saw Leah sitting there, chin in hand, bursting into laughter. Sensing their gaze, she lifted her head and glanced at them. "Sorry about that, I was reading a funny part in my comic. Did I disturb you?" "No worries, what comic were you reading?" Lily casually asked. "Oh, this one," Leah tilted her head, her beautiful eyes narrowed, her eyebrows curved. "It's a dark fairy tale about a fox disguised as a human, always pretending to be weak and deceiving others, and then..."

My first stop was the romance section, hoping to find a few good books to take back to my room for some relaxing reading. As I scanned the titles, one in particular caught my eye: The Toad and Her Man. The title alone made me burst into laughter. It was so absurdly funny that I couldn’t help but chuckle at the thought of what the story might entail. I decided to add it to my growing stack of books.

A childhood visual of the old witch from the library Hansel and Gretel book pops into my head and only increases the giggles I exude. “I hope not, I’m barely grown, and she might add me to tonight’s menu. I’m too big for an oven!” I point out between snorts of stupid laughter and Meadow caves and starts giggling too, lightening our whole mood. I guess the tension and the heavy weight of this journey has us strung out enough, that even a lame joke like this has enough power to break the strings and have us erupt. It’s needed, between us, this bonding over awful jokes.

There are history books, Psychology books, Biographies even novels. Like actual novels. My eyebrows lift slowly as my eyes glaze over some of the titles as I picked one and flipped over them. “Well this is deeply upsetting.”I murmur under my breath. “What is?”Mercer says his voice sounds amused behind me. “You being literate.”I say in a mocking tone and that earns me a low laugh from somewhere near the kitchen and once again the sound lands directly in my chest. God I love his laugh! It’s dangerous but everything about this man feels dangerous in the most unfairly attractive way possible. I pull one of the books halfway from the shelf before freezing.

he cut me off, his face now serious. My heart hammered heavily against my ribcage. Does he even know his effect on me? Every word and move he does just makes my system wild. “That's broad, Zev.” Amusement twinkled in his eyes followed by a chuckle. “You make me want to stay a bit longer.” I really am not gonna get a clear answer from him. “You make my head hurt, Zev.” Another laugh escaped his mouth. “Then I'll stay a bit longer.” “Why?”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. Even if I’m a walking disaster, at least I’m never boring. And who knows? Maybe all these little moments will add up to something pretty awesome in the end.” Gift grinned mischievously. “Absolutely! And hey, if all else fails, we can always write a book about our epic college misadventures and become famous for it. ‘The Chronicles of Clumsy College: Adventures in Chaos and Caffeine’ sounds like a bestseller, don’t you think?” We all burst into laughter again, the idea growing funnier by the second. The room was filled with an infectious energy, a blend of friendship, humor, and the thrill of discovering life’s unpredictable beauty.
