I move past them and walk into the living room. Lily is sitting on the floor again. Same spot. Same careful posture. She looks up when she sees me. “Can you help me with this,” she asks, holding up her book. Her voice is soft. Like she’s testing to see my reaction before getting comfortable. “Yeah,” I say. I sit down beside her. She shifts a little closer, turning the page toward me. “I don’t understand this part,” she says. I look at it. Words blur for a second.

I am sure his subordinates would never believe this. “I made a flower!” Lily announced, holding up a dumpling shaped vaguely like a blob. “It’s... very artistic,” Logan said, trying not to laugh and I glared at him. Does he really has to make a fun of a kid? “It’s a magical flower,” Lily insisted. “If you eat it, you get sparkles in your belly!” “Oh no,” I said dramatically. “I don’t think I’m ready for belly sparkles.” Lily burst into giggles, clutching her stuffed rabbit to her chest. “But you have to be ready! It’s how princesses get their powers!”

She lifted her gown and hurried after him as she was filled with a child-like enthusiasm. Finally, they stopped in front of a different place. It eaf filled with lilies growing tall. They were all red. A sheer red that was brighter than the rest of the leaves. Lillith walked to one of the lilies and plucked before comparing it with the leaf in her hand. The lily had a glitter to it. She turned it under the light of the sunset and she caught several tiny glitters that shone around it. She looked up to see Leon staring at her. "Is this magic? Can you tell me about this?"

But the seemingly timid Lily was blooming before my very eyes. She volunteered information as the three of us rolled up our, symbolic sleeves in my case, and set about getting my diner back in tiptop shape. As I had assumed, Lily was born on Timberland packlands and spent most of her life within its boundaries. What had surprised me, was the happy childhood she spoke about, days of making daisy chains, chasing butterflies and rabbits, looking for animals among the clouds, and making wishes on shooting stars.

Zac shrugged nonchalantly, smiling. "I thought you'd like it." He walked over to one wall, skimming the shelves until he pulled out a book. "I wanted you to have this." I looked at the book he held out for me to take. It was called "Bloom" by Kelle Hampton. I smiled at the title, meeting his eyes. "Wha—but why?"

Even from a distance, he saw it: the quiet determination in the way she smiled at the receptionist, the way her eyes scanned the building like she was memorizing her future. She wasn’t just surviving anymore. She was blooming. And he was still a ghost on the outside of her story. He slid his phone from his coat pocket, hesitating before opening a private secure thread labeled simply: LB. Typing always felt too easy. But still, he wrote. Some things are too sacred to rush. She couldn't see Liam's face but she dared to imagine how sad her words must have made him. "I should head back home now…" Lily spluttered inaudibly and the next second she whirled rapidly to flee from Liam. She had only moved a foot when Liam caught her and drew her into himself very swiftly. Lily's eyes almost jumped out of their sockets and she momentarily forgot how to breathe that instant as she found herself right inside the chest of Liam. The hard broad chest suddenly turned soft like a baby bottom and his scents cruised into her, softening all of her insides and bringing to broken pieces all her guards.

As she chewed, her fur began to glimmer softly, the glow growing brighter with each moment, as though the flower awakened something ancient and radiant within her. “I heard Moon Servants can connect their bodies directly to nature,” Earnest murmured through the mind-link, awe mixing with sharp worry. “That’s why she’s reacting like this. But it only heightens the danger. If anyone witnesses this glow…” Lily wandered deeper into the valley, irresistibly drawn to the glowing blooms. Butterflies settled across her fur as if she were one of the flowers herself. The sight stole the air from my lungs, ethereal, fragile, and heartbreakingly beautiful.

Julian’s eyes wandered to a clothing store next door that was opening the same day. [First Bloom] Julian looked at the sign twice. When he looked inside the window, he froze. A slender, graceful figure stood behind the counter. He stared in shock. Someone behind him nudged him impatiently. He snapped out of it and ran forward.

“You are not becoming like him. You’re twelve years old. You’re supposed to be drawing butterflies and worrying about homework and playing with that damn puppy. Not this. Not violence. Not blood on your hands.” Lily’s lower lip trembled, the first crack in her armor since they had found her sitting calmly on the burning porch. “But I can’t, Ceddy. Because butterflies die. And homework doesn’t matter when bad men come to take you away. Only staying alive matters. Only keeping you and Mommy safe matters.”
