I asked, trying to uncover every possible detail. “No one knows,” Lily replied. “Some say she died protecting the child, while others believe she’s still out there, keeping the child safe until the time is right for her to return.” I nodded at Lily, feeling a sudden need to be alone with my thoughts. "Can I be left alone for a bit?" I asked, my voice softer than usual. She nodded understandingly and quietly exited the library, leaving me in the serene silence of the room. Once she was gone, I eagerly reopened the book, my fingers trembling with anticipation. I flipped through the pages, hoping to piece together the fragmented story. The snippets of words and phrases I found were tantalizing,

Lily cupped her face. “I came as soon as Eagle called me.” “Yes, how did you get her phone number?” Lily asked. “I used your phone,” Eagle said. “How are you feeling?” “Like a car ran over me and had fun while he did.” “Was it a he driving?” Alfie asked, stepping forward. “I don’t know. I was crossing the road and I was sure I had enough time to get to the other side, but I think the car sped up.” Lily groaned.

Her hand rests over her belly. Lira sees it. Her own hand twitches once, then stills. Lily looks fragile in the smoke and moonlight, but not weak. Her hair is damp from mist. Her face has no color left. Still, she walks forward until the space between her and Lira is small enough to matter. No one speaks. The last wolf has risen from the mud. No one cheers. No one bows. For a moment, freedom looks exactly like fear. Then Lily lifts her chin.

Lily The scent of death hung heavy in the air. Lily pressed her tongue to the roof of her mouth, begging the rising vomit to stay down. It was all too familiar: the eerie sense of being a step out of time, the little cabins, the pack house looming over everything at the centre of the realm.

She shook her head, not even bothering to read the paragraph below it as she continued flipping. Eventually, she returned to page 47, finding nothing more on this place called the Crossing. Lyda turned the page over to the first blank parchment, sighing to herself as she rested her head back against the tree to stare up at the stars. As frustrated as she was, the spray of the streams on her face was soft and peace-inducing, like the touch of a million tiny fingertips. It was only in this tranquil state that Lyda's upward gaze fell upon something she had not noticed before.

Hoping Lily could move fast enough. The sound of glass splintering made my heart leap. “It’s breaking!” Lily whispered urgently. I screamed harder. The window finally gave with a sharp, jagged crash. Cold air rushed in. Freedom rushed in. I twisted around, my breath ragged. Lily had already climbed up onto an old crate beneath the window. Blood dotted her palm. “You cut yourself,” I gasped. “It’s nothing,” she said quickly. “Come on. I’ll go first.” Before I could argue, she was already squeezing through the broken window frame. Carefully. Slowly. Then she dropped down on the other side with a soft thud.

I felt the absence like a cold place in the room. “Where’s Lyra?” Caleb asked without looking up. “I don’t think she’ll be joining us,” I replied, breathless. “We can wait,” Lily said. She didn’t look up from the book she held. Her voice was steady but tight. “But we don’t have time to dawdle.” Lily set the book down like it was a live thing. The cover was cracked, the pages browned and smelling of dust and old rain. When she opened it, the two of us leaned in, the others forming a loose semicircle behind.

I didn't protest when Remi volunteered to walk me home. But I felt a little disappointed that Lily didn't even reach out to me when I was leaving but I made her goodbye any way. Turns out she was staring at some mermaid pictures in her book. Like who buys mermaid books for children these days. Oh, that is so wrong.

It felt like crossing a line she wasn’t sure she was ready to cross. Lily sighed, her breath forming small clouds in the chilly night air. She paused under a streetlamp, staring at the soft glow illuminating the sidewalk beneath her feet. The brothers had been so sincere, their eyes filled with hope as they expressed their desire to be with her. It had been an intimate moment, one that had left her both exhilarated and terrified.

Trying to avoid tripping over one sounded like a good idea. Lily listened carefully as she moved stealthily from tree to tree, relying on her enhanced vision and hearing to alert her of any danger. The sun moved slowly overhead, signalling the passage of time, but Lily disregarded the need to hurry. This was meant to be a... what was it called? A reconnaissance mission. A sort of search-and-escape scenario. She was about to admit she was wasting her time when she was hit by the distinct fragrance of chocolate butter fudge. Yes! She continued forward till she saw a tin roof through the woods.
