Lily’s voice came from behind the rose wall, with a kind of fragmented broken feeling, light as a wisp of smoke, “I just... I just saw you two being so happy, and I’m happy for you, truly I am but my heart... it won’t listen, it hurts so much.”
My heart suddenly sank. Holding my breath, I kept to the shadows of the roses and the foliage from plum trees towering overhead.
“Lily, you’ve had too much to drink.” David’s voice was full of that kind of patience and compassion that I knew well, when he was faced with someone needing help.
