"I love you, Mira." "I love you too." The days passed slowly. Rex healed. Lily never left his side. She read him stories. She sang him songs. She told him about Anna. "Anna was very pretty," Lily said. "She had green eyes. Like Mira. Like me." "What else?" "She was kind. She was brave. She was not afraid of anything." "That sounds like you." Lily shook her head. "I am afraid of lots of things." "Like what?"

she said. Judith sat on the edge of the bed beside her. “You want me to read from the drawing book.” “No,” Lily said. “Make a story up.” “What should it be about.” Lily thought about it. “A girl,” she said. “And a garden. And a swing.” Judith looked at her daughter’s face. Open and warm and completely trusting. “Okay,” she said. “A girl and a garden and a swing.” She started talking and Lily leaned against her and listened and by the time the girl in the story had found the swing Lily’s eyes were already closing.

I said. "Me too. But enough about me. Tell me about you, Lily. What do you do? Where do you live? Are you happy?" I hesitated. Where did I even begin? Did I tell him about Alex? About the abuse and torture and murder attempts? About being poisoned and paralyzed? About Emma being kidnapped? Tony must have seen my expression because he jumped in smoothly. "Lily runs a nonprofit foundation that helps domestic violence survivors. She's also a published author and public speaker."

Lily replied, calm but defensive. “Don’t lie to me,” Catherine pressed. “That child is not human.” “He is my son,” Lily said. “That is all that matters.” “And his father?” Catherine asked quietly but there was silence instead. My heart slammed against my ribs. “That man is not in our lives,” Lily said at last. “And he never will be.” I closed my eyes as the words hurt more than I expected. Erika heard the rumors by evening. She didn’t knock. She stormed into my office like a storm, her heels sharp against the floor, her eyes blazing.

Lily came in the afternoon with her backpack still on and three things she had apparently been accumulating for several days, a packet of the south-market chili sweets I had mentioned once in passing, a small stone she had found on the academy grounds because it was smooth and she thought I might like smooth things, and a drawing she had done of what she described as me and her and a wolf, though the wolf was considerably larger than both of us and appeared to be smiling. I held the drawing and looked at it properly. "That's your wolf," she said, pointing at the large one. "I made it big because I think your wolf is big." "She is," I said. Lily seemed satisfied with this. She sat on the edge

I followed the voices of the laughter only to find Lucas and Lily bonding together and laughing looking at the book. "Lily flower, which part did you like the most in the story?" Lucas asked Lily after he closed the book and looked at my beautiful five-year-old daughter. "The most favorite part of the story is when the knight saves the princess from the dragon. The knight was so brave, Lucas. just like you are the brave knight who saved Mommy and me today." Lily answers in a soft adorable voice. I cleared my throat to let them know of my presence. When they heard me, they both turned around and looked at me. Lily giggled and came running to me and spoke.

"I've survived this long without anyone, I plan on continuing that. I should get going-" "Didn't you come here looking for something?" Laura asked. "I miss your parents deeply, Lily, please let me do what I can to help you. If we get rid of Rogue I will get my oldest friends back, your parents. Please, let me help you." Lily's eyes flickered to Indianna who nodded. "Fine," she muttered. "I'm looking for a book." "About?" Laura asked. "The Royals," Lily said. "It's some stupid children's book, but I need it."

She twirled the dagger between her fingers before tossing it into the air, catching it effortlessly. "Lily," I thought suddenly. I searched through the battlefield, my heart pounding. Lily had been taken, but I had lost sight of her in the chaos. Then, I saw her. She was fighting. Despite my order to stay hidden, Lily had broken free from her captors and was battling her way through the enemy lines. Her hands crackled with raw magic, lightning-like tendrils snapping at any rogue who dared approach her. Her eyes glowed an eerie silver, her power radiating in waves.
