Cold Friction
The kitchen was a sterile monument to Richard’s wealth—gleaming white marble countertops, stainless steel appliances that looked like they belonged in a surgical ward, and vast, dark windows that reflected the ghost of my own exhaustion.
I moved to the refrigerator, the digital display glowing a faint, icy blue in the dark. I grabbed a glass from the cupboard, filled it with crushed ice, and let the filtered water run over it.
