"Stop; just stop it, Lance!" she said a bit too loudly, but I didn't care. "Stop blaming yourself! This is not your fault! Sometimes things happen."
"Okay, okay," I said. She was getting visibly upset. "Let's just enjoy our meal."
She nodded, forcing a smile.
"Good afternoon, and welcome to Maggiano's Little Italy," a waitress with long black hair asked in a thick Italian accent. "What would you like to start off with?"
