Maya pushed open the side gate of the Carter house, the late-August heat sticking her tank top to her back. She’d driven straight from campus after her last final, telling no one she was coming home early. Lila thought Maya was still unpacking dorm boxes until tomorrow. The surprise was supposed to be simple; sneak in, tackle-hug her best friend from behind, then drag her out for snacks and to talk about freshman year. The backyard was empty. Lila wasn't floating on an inflatable flamingo, no Bluetooth speaker blasting whatever playlist she’d been obsessed with last month.
