I turned sharply, eyes scanning the darkness.
“Liam?”
No answer.
Then, out of the gloom, someone stepped forward. Not Liam.
Morgan.
He looked different. Thinner. Older. His clothes were torn, his eyes hollow, but there was something in his expression I didn’t recognize, a strange calm, like someone who’d already made peace with a terrible choice.
“Morgan?” I whispered, unable to believe it. “You’re alive.”
He gave a small, humorless smile. “Depends on what you mean by alive.”
