Cord noted, his golden eyes shining with absolute pride. "I couldn't find anything heavy enough down there to dent it," I replied, my ruined hands twitching slightly inside the gauntlets as the adrenaline began to fade. Elara stepped forward. She didn't have her iron staff drawn. She walked up to me, looking at the seamless, impossible geometry of the armor, and then up at my exhausted face. "The Hive-Mind?" she asked softly. "It's alive," I said, looking out past the cliffs toward the dark horizon of the ocean. "But it's terrified. It knows we aren't just hiding behind walls anymore. It knows we can walk in the dark."

And the fact that she was a complete stranger made me appreciate her even more. Someone risked her life to save a piece of garbage like me while I was alone in the vastness of the water. That day, I couldn't decide whether to be glad that He had kept me alive or angry because I knew that once I was living, something awful would happen in my life again.
