The spray hit her face, bitingly cold, carrying the sharp scent of old frost.
"I don't need to swim through it," Anna said, looking across the twenty-foot gap to the final exit portal. Suspended above the roaring water were a series of uneven, rotating iron gears: the mechanical components that drove the pillars behind her. They spun at high speeds, slick with black grease and freezing spray.
Torin yelled through the speaker, "The gears spin at sixty revolutions per minute, girl! One slip, and you lose a foot!"
Anna didn't answer him. She looked back at Liam, her amber eyes locking onto his icy blue.
