The smell of pancakes hit me first, and my stomach growled loud enough to embarrass me.
Lola was standing by the stove with her hair in a messy pineapple bun, wearing my pink slippers like she owned them. She flipped a pancake with unnecessary flair, then she saw me at the doorway and smirked.
“Good morning, Princess,” she said.
“You’re being too loud,” I mumbled, rubbing my face. “I need coffee.”
She pointed to a mug already waiting on the counter, and I almost teared up from gratitude alone. I wrapped my hands around it, inhaling the steam like it was oxygen, then I hopped weakly onto a stool.
