Lost in the Forest of Clouds
The world around them was silent save for the steady patter of rain.
"Allen," Serene said softly, breaking the silence. "I don’t have a home anymore."
The butler stopped pushing the wheelchair. Allen, too, halted and looked at her.
"My mother is gone, my sister is in prison, and my father barely comes home anymore. He’s too busy training someone else to take over the family. I’m alone."
She opened her mouth as if to say more, but no words came. What could she say? This sense of isolation wasn’t new; it had always been the undercurrent of their relationship. Perhaps that realization was why she suddenly let out a dry, bitter laugh.
