SAM I let my eyes wander around when Phoenix ushers me outside the car. This place is an old books store which is renovated in to a big and modern one. Many well-known authors used this venue for book signing events. A woman around my age approaches us wearing a bright smile on her face. “Mr. Williams, Ms. Anderson, good evening! Please, follow me.” I am surprised to hear my name, and I grin at her in return. I feel Phoenix’s hand gripping my waist. “Let’s get inside, beautiful.”

She winked at me and thumbs up, so I left the condo. *** After 3 hours of driving, I arrived in the venue already. It’s loud already since they rented a band who will sing while I’m signing. Actually it’s like a tradition already to our publishing house to rent a band while signing the books, so a lot of people are going. I waved my hand to the people who are greeting me, I’m smiling and talking to them since it’s still early. I went to my admin’s direction, she’s the one who’s taking care of my readers to get a seat.

I asked, standing in front of him across the kitchen island. He closes the laptop and takes another sip of his coffee, looking at me with a serious face. "Sorry, baby girl. I sign their books and I watch them leave together and I understand that this is what the tour means. This is why I wrote the book. This is why I'm willing to be vulnerable in front of crowds of people. The last reading is in Los Angeles. It's at a bookstore on Sunset Boulevard. There's a bigger crowd here. Maybe three hundred people. The space is full of energy. There's press there. There are people who know my work from the first book and people who are discovering my story for the first time.

Leo closed his eyes and pressed his hands together. “I wish I could stay with Mom forever.” After a moment, he glanced at the empty chair across from him. “Just the two of us would be okay.” I pulled him into my arms. “Okay.” After Leo blew out the candles, I put the card with the three of us into a drawer and left the signature pages from the attorney on the dining table. This time, I was waiting only for his signature.

Ava The Las Vegas Book Festival was held in a sprawling park just off the strip. Tents stretched across the grass, white canopies flapping in the desert wind. Authors milled about, clutching coffee cups and clutching their nerves. Readers wandered between booths, arms loaded with books, faces bright with excitement. I was scheduled to speak at 2 PM on the main stage. My talk went well. Better than well. The crowd was warm, engaged, full of questions about forgiveness and healing and the stories that save us. I read from my novel—the passage about Elena learning to be alone—and watched as people wiped their eyes.
