He fell silent for a moment, jaw working like the next words cost him something.
“I’ve never told anyone this. Not even my mother. It’s been sitting in my chest like a stone for years.” He looked at me then, something breaking open behind his eyes. “But I’m glad I’m finally sharing it with you.”
He paused, drawing another breath, before continuing.
“I used to be a playboy,” he said. “I slept around, flirted with anyone who caught my eye — it never meant anyth
