Then the line went dead. Then— "You’re not actually thinking of doing this?” Justin asked. I turned my head to look at him. "I am." His entire body tensed. "Lyla, are you insane?" He ran a frustrated hand through his hair before leveling me with a glare. "Breaking into Lucian’s safe? Do you have any idea how dangerous that is? This is suicide!" I exhaled slowly, already expecting this reaction. "Oh, so now you care?" I lifted a brow. "Because the last time I checked, you were the one who kept calling me out for not wanting to bring Lucian down anymore."

Salem was hunched over beside her, grinning into his blood-soaked knuckles. “I only did it in a dream,” he said, his eyelids pulled fully back. “I . . . heh . . . I didn’t know.” My throat felt dry with worry. Did that mean if he harmed someone in a dream, the wounds would manifest in reality? Could one no longer die in a dream to escape him? Theresa came up behind me and peeked through the doorway. She covered her mouth at the sight. She knew what it meant: even though Salem had brought home a stranger to sate his desire to kill, the fact that he had this desire at all meant we were all at risk.

You would kill yourself before you allowed anyone else to die- I know you. You wouldn’t harm anyone like that.” He cupped my cheek and rubbed our noses together. “Everyone trusts you honey, especially me. Try not to think about it, okay?” He’s right. It was just a nightmare. I’d never hurt anyone. I nodded and hugged him tightly. “Are you going to be able to go back to sleep?” Conor asked sweetly. I shook my head in response.

It was dark magick that she spoke of, but is there really magick? After a while of reflecting, I finally hoisted myself up to start on my tasks for the day. I finished my tasks within a few hours, then sat down to write of my dream. The dream of Laylan racing and meeting a brother of light, whatever that was. He was very good-looking, and he seemed to have a good heart. There was something about him that was familiar though. I couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but I knew there was something. As the day went on, I decided to watch some movies to keep my mind from Laylan and Zelimir. Though The Matrix Trilogy was probably not the best movies for that.

“How do you know?” “You’re not the only one who has done ‘research’ on this,” he said, poking the cover of the book on the table. “I had a professor who was obsessed with the idea that all those legends of mystic wolves sharing powers were true. We even performed some mock rituals for a midterm.” “So— it’s possible, then? To wake a dormant wolf?” I could hear the desperation in my voice, but I didn’t care. “It is, I believe,” Lucian said with a shrug. “But from what I know, it’s very difficult and can be quite dangerous. In fact, it really relies on danger in order to work.”

“And that she wasn’t me.” Silence filled the room. Lucien exhaled slowly. He reached out and pulled me into his arms. He held me close. His hand stroked my hair in slow and steady motions. “It was just a nightmare,” he said softly. “Nothing more.” But my body did not relax. “It felt… important,” I said. “Like a warning.” He tilted my head up so I had to look at him. His expression was calm, reassuring and almost gentle. “You have been through a lot,” he said. “The ritual. The exhaustion. Your mind is still trying to make sense of things. Dreams could feel very real.”

He stepped into the light, holding a mug of something steaming. “Didn’t mean to scare you,” he said, handing me the mug. I took it, the warmth seeping through the ceramic into my hands. “What are you doing up?” “Could ask you the same thing,” he said, sitting beside me. “Nightmares?” I nodded, staring into the mug. “Lucien. Ryder. They won’t leave me alone. Even in my sleep, they’re there, watching, waiting.” Lucas leaned back, his gaze fixed on the stars. “They’ve got a hold on you, kiddo. Not just in your dreams, but here,” he said, tapping his temple. “You’ve got to shake them off.”

Killian pinched the bridge of his nose, pacing the room. “So there really weren’t any wolves?” I asked and she nodded. “Your fears invoked them.” I closed my eyes in both embarrassment and dread. When the oracle asked about my awakening the other day, I thought little it as I assumed my dreams were enough for a hybrid but now, this. What kind of awakening brought my fears to life? Was this a gift or a curse? “Illusion,” Killian muttered. “It sounds dangerous.” “It is,” Victoria said. “If you are not careful, you can be sucked into the illusions your mind creates and it – well – it is capable of destroying a person’s mind.”
