CHAPTER ONE The full moon that night was unusually bright. I couldn't remember the last time I'd ever seen it shine that brightly, but I did remember sitting at the raised pedestal with my family and my friends, where I was supposed to be eating and celebrating, but all I did was look glum. The moon was supposed to be a warning, but I missed it. My father caught me staring up at the moon curiously and I heard him give a low chuckle beside me. "You think it's unusual, don't you, daughter?"

The color seemed to be coming from the air itself, a static charge so thick that everyone’s hair began to stand on end. "Lucas," Audrey whispered, reaching for him. Lucas approached, his silver arm still dull and heavy. He looked up at the emerald sky and felt a vibration in his teeth. "It’s not a weather pattern. It’s an atmospheric possession." Inside the palace, Caelum was no longer the calm, analytical child. He was standing in the center of the Great Hall, his small body arching as if he were being pulled by invisible wires. Bolts of emerald lightning danced between his fingertips and the obsidian floor.

The blue light turned a violent, warning red. The hum of the machine rose to a deafening pitch. “Obsidian doesn’t just generate energy, my dear,” Lucius said calmly over the noise, as chaos erupted around us—Arthur shouting, Vincent backing away, Elvira looking terrified. “It amplifies it. It stores it. And when fully activated… it releases it. Not just to power cities. But to reshape them.”
