CHAPTER ONE The full moon that night was unusually bright. I couldn't remember the last time I'd ever seen it shine that brightly, but I did remember sitting at the raised pedestal with my family and my friends, where I was supposed to be eating and celebrating, but all I did was look glum. The moon was supposed to be a warning, but I missed it. My father caught me staring up at the moon curiously and I heard him give a low chuckle beside me. "You think it's unusual, don't you, daughter?"

How does an alpha sense such things? Has Victoria’s behavior changed as well?” I asked, watching Laura closely.

My heart raced as the man closed the distance between our faces, leaving me only able to see his hazelnut eyes, sharp yet beautiful, while his lips were less than a centimeter away from mine. As Amaris finished speaking red and blue lights light up the far wall of the kitchen. They were coming in from the window next to the side door.

The color seemed to be coming from the air itself, a static charge so thick that everyone’s hair began to stand on end. "Lucas," Audrey whispered, reaching for him. Lucas approached, his silver arm still dull and heavy. He looked up at the emerald sky and felt a vibration in his teeth. "It’s not a weather pattern. It’s an atmospheric possession." Inside the palace, Caelum was no longer the calm, analytical child. He was standing in the center of the Great Hall, his small body arching as if he were being pulled by invisible wires. Bolts of emerald lightning danced between his fingertips and the obsidian floor.

The title hung heavy in the air, chilling the room with its implications. “We need to tread carefully, Thorne. She’s a living weapon, destructive and unpredictable.” Thorne nodded, understanding the unspoken complexities. “Do you want to reach out? Offer some kind of truce or—”

Two fluffy silver fox ears sprouted atop his head like mischievous antennae of divine gossip. “Oh no no no—!” he gasped, quickly slapping a leaf on his head with practiced panic. The leaf shimmered once, and the ears vanished. He looked around, cheeks puffed in embarrassment. Good. No witnesses. Not even that creepy vending machine ghost. Yin coughed, smoothing down his hair with faux dignity. “Anyway, yes. She’s definitely the one. Nexus’s whole ‘the land shall choose the spirit-bearing flame born in rust’ nonsense? Yeah. Selena literally works in Vermillion Cyberspace. Couldn’t get more prophetic if it slapped us.”
