Caleb's grin died when he saw Mason's face. "Before you speak," Caleb said, "the Luna commanded-" "She commanded you to empty three subsidiary accounts during trading hours?" Mason dropped his ledger on the obsidian desk. The sound made Caleb flinch. "While the eastern caravans report bandit raids?" "She's the Luna." "She's a parasite." The inner door sighed open on enchanted hinges. Selene emerged from Jaxon's chamber, wearing a gown the color of fresh blood. She moved differently now - looser, hungrier. Something had changed her. Mason had watched her face that night, standing in the rain six yards from the scene, waiting for confirmation that Lumira Duskbane was truly dead.

I had seen it in old pack portraits, resting on the necks of past Lunas. Elena lifted the box higher so everyone could see it. “This necklace has been passed down for five generations,” she announced. “It belongs to the true Luna of Silver Ridge. It carries blessing and protection from the Moon Goddess. It gives strength to the one who wears it.” My fingers tightened around my fork. True Luna. Elena turned and held the box out to Clara. Clara’s eyes widened. She pressed her hands to her mouth like she was shocked. “No,” she whispered. “Luna Elena, I can’t accept that. It belongs to Ava.”

“I heard Mason call you Luna in front of everyone. Corin, do you understand what that means? This pack is not like ours was. Here the Luna is not decoration at the Alpha’s side. Here the Luna is the mother of the pack and the leader of the warriors.” “I know, Mother,” I whispered, closing my eyes as the damp cloth touched my skin. “Mason told me. He wants me to rule beside him, not behind him.” Her hand paused. “And you? Are you ready for that? Are you ready for war? Glacier will not let this go. I have heard the whispers in the corridors. The silver wolves are already gathering at the border.” I opened my eyes and looked directly at her. The fear that once paralyzed me felt distant now.

She wanted Shayne to refuse to believe Zach when Zach told the truth one day. Luna's gaze softened when her beloved son returned. She beckoned him over with a smile. Her son immediately went to her side. "Mason, in a little while, go to your room and stay there. Don't come out no matter what happens, okay?" Mason nodded. "Okay, Mom." Luna patted his shoulder. "Go now." Mason returned to his room. Only when she heard the door close did Luna start working herself up emotionally. Zach could only stare at her, baffled. What was she up to this time?

She opened the book to a marked page, the ancient words written in a language few understood, but one she had painstakingly learned. A hush fell over the group as Lexa began to trace her fingers over the symbols, carefully studying each step of the incantation. She had spent time poring over this book, committing every detail to memory. Now, with the moon high above, it was time. “She’s going to make me the new Luna,” Lexa said, her voice low but laced with conviction. “Lily has no idea what’s coming.” Liam smiled approvingly. “Once you’re Luna, everything will change. The pack will be stronger with you leading beside us.”
