My palms hovered above it. I closed my eyes, shutting the noise in the camp and allowing my mind to wrap around the crystal. “I am Lyra,” I whispered. “Daughter of Aurora. I seek not power, but purpose. I’m ready! I want to understand. To protect what’s left of my people.” The crystal pulsed once, then twice. Suddenly, a gush of wind swept through me lifting my hair above my shoulder, causing goosebumps to creep under my skin. My eyeballs began to roll rapidly underneath my eyelids.

Chapter Ten I step outside the ballroom, air stinging against my skin. The chill wraps around me, sharper than the hum in my stomach. My heels click on the pavement, echoing through the night, with every step away from the music and laughter that sound like mockery of my pain. I wrap my arms around myself, trying to ward off the cold, but it's no use. The freezing wind isn't outside but inside me, solidifying my heart and making my thoughts leaden and slow.
