The water passed straight through the shadow and turned black. Morrow floated closer. Her white light touched the edge of the darkness. The two forces clashed violently. Light and shadow pushed against each other. The shadow figure trembled slightly. But did not fall. You are bright, it said softly to Morrow. But not bright enough. With one smooth motion, it lifted its hand. Morrow was thrown backward into a building. Maria screamed. “No!” The shadow turned slowly toward the city. Toward the people. Toward everything. Helios moved to block it.

It’s against everything fate has tried to impose upon us. Dorian notices. The smile vanishes from his face, replaced by a flicker of surprise. For a second, uncertainty clouds his gaze—and that’s all I need to believe that maybe, just maybe, we have a chance. “You don’t know who you’re messing with,” Shadow whispers, his voice deeper, darker, like a lament, as if everything he’s endured has prepared him for this moment. He moves swiftly—faster than I expected—and confronts Dorian. The energy surrounding Shadow explodes in a burst of light and darkness that seems to fracture reality itself.

KAREN’S POV The shadows shouldn’t have failed. I kept replaying that thought as I stood by the window, fingers digging into the sill until the wood cracked beneath my nails. Below me, the courtyard shimmered with moonlight, silver dust coating the stones like frost. My shadows—my loyal, obedient creations—had never failed before. They were supposed to be silent, invisible, efficient. But this time, they came back in pieces, ripped apart by a force I didn’t even understand.

Brendan’s voice echoed and rippled through the shadows, making it even harder for her to pinpoint where his voice was coming from. “I said stop calling me that!” ‘Rey!’ Suki cried out down the bond. ‘Rey, please, I need you!’ “I can feel you trying to call out to him. You can’t reach out to others when you’re in the shadows, and they can’t reach out to you either. He won’t be able to sense your presence either,” he said, emerging from behind a tree. “The shadows block all of that kind of magic. To the shadows, all that exists is what is within them; if you try to get out, you’ll still end up within the walls.”

For the first time in my life I knew I was about to lose someone again and I could not stop it. I looked at Rain standing there while Aaron moved toward her, and suddenly my body felt cold. Then everything changed. Darkness crept into the clearing. The ground beneath us trembled violently as black shadows spread everywhere like smoke crawling across the earth. Rain gasped. Aaron instantly stepped back. My eyes widened in shock. Shadow wolves - Kade's Shadow wolves. These creatures made entirely of darkness started slithering out from the shadows around us. Their glowing eyes locked onto Aaron instantly as low growls filled the clearing.

The shadow doesn’t even notice. I slam a palm against the shadow over her head, snatching it away before it can hurt her. It’s like putty against my fingers—solid but fluid, colder than a piece of ice. My own shadows flare wildly at their brethren’s proximity, but I grit my teeth and ignore the sudden roiling movement of my marks. Squeezing tightly, I jerk the shadow away from the wall and slam it onto the stove, while I use my other hand to turn on the burner. There’s a soft click, and then a small ring of flame flares up, making the shadow screech. I don’t release it until it catches fire.
