“Your mom’s birthday? Why didn’t you say anything?”
“Nah, it’s not a big deal,” Mabel said, her voice soft. She looked down, fiddling with the edge of her sleeve. “I just… didn’t want to make a fuss, especially since she hurt people, plus it’s been years since she passed, but I still like to honor her memory quietly. A sweet note or something would have been nice, though.”
My heart ached for her. Mabel always put on a brave face, but I could see the sadness lingering behind her smile. Mentally, I made a decision: I would write her a note, something heartfelt and meaningful. But that wasn’t enough. She deserved more.
