The next morning, I take Mia into the kitchen for her morning meal. Beau is already there eating eggs and toast. There are dirty dishes in the sink. Did his date cook for him? Not that I care. Beau catches my line of sight and rolls his eyes. “I’m not totally helpless, you know. I can make eggs.” I’m not overly convinced of that, but if he’s trying to tell me his date went home, I’ll accept it. I take Mia to her high chair and then set to retrieving her bottle.

"Be careful, Ma." She nodded, offering him another reassuring smile that didn't quite reach her eyes. Then, she pushed the door open and stepped out into the cold night air. All eyes were on her, watching her as if she were a movie. The henchmen, their faces unreadable, stared at her with a disturbing indifference. Ximena stood tall, her head held high. She wore a scarlet dress, a boldly short one that barely covered her flawless thighs.

The aroma of whatever he made filled my nostrils as I stood in the kitchen and waited for him to acknowledge my presence. “It’s not even morning, Homer,” he grumbled and then faced the stove to continue. A young woman came into the kitchen holding a bucket and mop and wearing a maid uniform. “Stella, could you also mop the office?” Dominic softened his voice when he spoke to the random woman “Okay, sir.” she nodded and walked away. “Stella is also a maid. She has been a maid for a very long time now, and she does a very good job.” Dominic said, “Don’t make me pick her over you.” he continued in a lower voice.
