she explained, leading us into the house. It looked nothing like I expected it to. In my mind it was immaculate and filled with expensive trinkets, but it was not. The walls were adorned with certificates with Maggie’s name on – from swimming to horse riding, pictures of her and Jack and family photos. My eyes flicked from one image to another, drinking them in. “You were a really cute kid,” I murmured as we passed a photo of Maggie with her hair in pigtails, grinning at the camera with a tooth missing.

We left the house, riding to the human district using an old pickup truck. Westridge was foggy, nothing unusual. People walked past us, no one noticing anything strange. But when someone bumped into Maggie, her aura was back, her stomach glowing faintly.

Felix helped Maggie into her car and I followed him in the truck. Maggie had been coherent enough to give him her address and I looked at the single story house in the quiet neighbourhood. Felix rummaged in her handbag for her keys while I picked Chloe up. Upstairs were two bedrooms and I put Chloe down on the bed in the plain room. The other one was obviously Maggie’s room. I heard soft murmurs as Felix put her to bed and I headed back downstairs. “What are you doing?” Felix asked me.

I've got the night off tonight and instead of letting myself be alone with her in one of our rooms, I've suggested we go out and it's purely to put off the inevitable. The house was inexplicably quiet this morning when I got in from work, usually one of my brother's is snoring or someone is getting up to use the bathroom, but either I slept heavily enough to not be disturbed or they're all having a lie in, because it's gone ten in the morning and the house is still silent. she said, chuckling, her laughter echoing through the room. Maggie had gone to look for Leah in her room but didn't find her there, so she went to Jeremy's room to see if Leah was there. She heard their voices and leaned on the door, eavesdropping on their conversation. She was having goosebumps from hearing them play and giggle like that.

“O so you’re funny, not just beautiful. Good to know.” The next day Maggie picked me up from my house. It was Saturday and we usually watched movies at her house. My dad was not doing great since losing my mom, but he was doing his best. However, he didn’t like a lot of noise in the house and when the three of us got together, we were pretty loud. So we usually met at Maggie’s house or Rishi’s. “What about if we pick up Rishi and go shopping instead?” I asked. “Why? What do you need?” Maggie asked.

The room went silent for a few seconds and in those few seconds I prepared my mind to accept whatever it was Maggie was going to say. “So Maggie let’s hear what you’ve got to say,” I said as I relaxed my back on my chair trying to look less bothered. We all heard Maeve exhale as she cleaned her palms which were now sweaty on her dress. The way Maggie looked at Maeve with pity when Maeve exhaled made me start losing hope in my thought that whatever Maggie was going to tell us would be good news.

*** Maggie’s apartment was across town. Maggie reclined on her leather couch with a glass of wine dangling from her fingers. Gathered in the dim light, it was cozy and warm yet still low-key in keeping with what she wanted. Beside her, Jack flipped idly through a magazine, occasionally murmuring to break the silence, talking of school. She nodded occasionally, half listening, just savoring the mellow rhythm of the evening. An uneventful day, highly predictable, just the way she liked it. Ethereal silence was broken by the sudden vibration of her phone against the armrest.
