Only to be used when one is in dire danger and needs urgent saving.” She stopped at a page and placed it before me. “That is it. Can you even read it?” The page before me seemed like gibberish, rubbish that I could read. When I shook my head at Magma, she sighed and then leaned forward. “Oops, you have to take that off. I forgot. There is no way you can do magic with it on you. That means you'll dispel energy and your scent. Are you willing to risk being found?* I didn't even need to think about it. That was exactly what I wanted.

But instead of old stories from my grandmother’s life, the pages were scrawled with strange symbols and sketches—shorthand in her handwriting explaining the purpose of different runes and sigils. Flipping through the pages, there were sketches of wolves, and the last page that she’d written in had a detailed rendition of a nightmarish wolf-beast that made my blood run cold at the sight of it, it’s eyes smudged over with charcoal in the shape of a protective rune. My heart raced when I realized what I was holding. This was no ordinary journal, it was a spell book.

Eleanor’s POV My heart skipped a beat as I spotted a book bound in black leather. Gold letters on the cover proudly declared its title: "Mastery of Magic." A shiver ran down my spine as I opened it, scanning its pages for any guidance on the powers that had both blessed and troubled me. There, written in simple and clear words, was a guide on how to control the very magic that now felt like a wild force within me. A surge of hope filled my heart. This book might be the key to mastering my gifts, to unlocking the secrets of my magic and understanding my past.

“You’re trying too hard to copy how everyone else uses magic. You can’t do that, Julie. No one knows what it’s like to be a Chronokeeper — not even the High Council.” I frowned. “Then how am I supposed to learn?” She smiled faintly and pulled something from her satchel — a small leather-bound book, its pages edged with silver runes. “You start here,” she said, placing it in my hands. I turned it over. The cover was blank, but I could feel mana humming from within. “What is it?”

When I stood in front of the book, the first page turned on its own. "First lesson of the Seven Magics Academy," Pops said, eyeing me. "You must never touch any of the pages in the books in this room. Touching them will increase their speed of deterioration." "Then, how?" I began, putting my hands at my sides so I wouldn't accidentally touch one. "Like this." He smiled, then leaned in close to the book. "Chapter One," Professor Pops said. The book instantly flicked to the page that said Chapter One.

"Does reading this kind of book help to learn different kinds of magic, like casting?" I ask, leaning forward to look at the book, but get confronted with rows of words constituted of letters that fit on the tip of a pencil in paragraphs in single-space rows. I become dizzy and instead just listen to what Machiv answers, and realize that Machiv probably has an ability to take any long academic piece of literature and compile into a paragraph that can be understood by a person like me, while still remain
